Tomorrow’s Forest afforestation programme reaches milestone

• 600,000 seedlings were planted in three years, which means a 60% completion of the programme
• Spring campaign of 2020: 57.6 hectares on 13 sites in Suceava, Maramureș, Harghita, Brașov, Cluj and Satu-Mare counties
• Tomorrow’s Forest is focusing on expansion to promote responsible forest management in Romania

True to the slogan „We help, we plant!”, the Tomorrow’s Forest afforestation programme continued this spring, with 13 new projects in six counties, on a total of 57.6 hectares of private owners who do not have the necessary resources to ensure sustainable reforestation of their lands.
„As today we celebrate World Environment Day, we are proud to announce that the Tomorrow’s Forest afforestation programme has reached a milestone,” said Ionuț Apostol, executive director of Tomorrow’s Forest Foundation. “Over 600,000 seedlings were planted in the past three years with the financial support of HS Timber Group, which means a 60% completion of the initial stage – that include five years of planting and up to seven years of maintenance in each case.” In total, 146 hectares were covered within the project, with financing from HS Timber Group.
“This spring, we planted in line with the safety measures imposed by the pandemic,” added Ionuț Apostol. “Planting was only done by specialised companies, or by the forest management units that take care of the respective areas. Unfortunately, we couldn’t mobilise our volunteers who expressed their willingness to take part in the project, but we keep in touch with them for the next season. Also, seedlings were planted at some of the reforestation sites we initiated in previous years, where needed.” As a next step, additional resources will be allocated starting June, towards maintenance works, such as removal of grass around seedlings, to support their healthy development.
Furthermore, Tomorrow’s Forest is looking into an expansion of scope, to promote responsible forest management in Romania. “We will develop two additional directions: nature and community-oriented projects as well as a responsible forestry programme,” added Ionut Apostol. ”We aim to educate younger generations and raise awareness on the importance of sustainable forest management, respect for nature and low impact forestry.”

About Tomorrow’s Forest
Tomorrow’s Forest is a programme developed by the Forest Administrators’ Association together with the Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava and HS Timber Group. The goal is to ensure a sustainable development of forests. The project aims to plant one million seedlings in five years. Forest maintenance and monitoring activities will continue for up to seven years at each site, to ensure that the young forest vegetation is properly installed. The Tomorrow’s Forest initiative supports private owners who do not have the necessary resources to ensure sustainable replanting of their forest lands. The Tomorrow’s Forest Foundation was set up in 2019 with the strategic help of HS Timber Group. The Foundation’s mission is to contribute to the protection and the responsible management of forests and the development of a sustainable forest economy in Romania. HS Timber Group seeks with this strategic partnership to get a more targeted and better implementation of the company’s CSR engagement. For more information, visit https://padureademaine.ro/en/
